Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best Full Size Arcade Machine
Choosing the right arcade machine requires understanding key factors to ensure it fits your space, budget, and gaming preferences.
Build Quality
Build quality determines how well the machine lasts. Commercial grade units often use solid wood and durable panels instead of particle board. Look for specifications like 3/4 inch plywood or heavy duty construction. This ensures stability and longevity even with regular play.
Prioritize units with commercial grade materials to avoid wobbly or fragile cabinets.
Game Library
The number of games included varies greatly across models. Some offer a few dozen classics while others provide thousands. Decide if you prefer focused titles or a vast library. Check if the game list is safe for all ages.
Choose a machine with a game count that matches your expected usage style.
Screen Size
Screen size impacts immersion significantly. Most home units offer 17 inch displays but some commercial models have larger screens. A larger screen can make retro graphics clearer and more enjoyable. Ensure the size fits your room dimensions.
Select a screen size that balances clarity with available floor space.
Controls and Accessories
Controls like joysticks and trackballs must feel authentic. Some machines include shooting guns or steering wheels for specific genres. Check if these accessories are durable. High quality controls enhance the retro experience effectively.
Ensure the controls match the type of games you enjoy playing most.
Space and Dimensions
Measure your room before buying. Full size machines can range from compact to large commercial units. Check height and width to ensure proper placement. Cocktail models require more floor space than upright ones.
Always verify the cabinet dimensions against your available room space.
Warranty
Warranty coverage protects your investment. Some offer 3 years while others provide 5 years. Check what parts are covered and how repairs are handled. A longer warranty suggests higher confidence in durability.
Opt for models with at least a 3 year warranty for peace of mind.
Connectivity
Modern arcade machines often include Wi-Fi for leaderboards. This feature adds competitive play with friends or others. Check if the machine supports online updates. Connectivity extends the life of the gaming experience.
Look for Wi-Fi support if you want competitive online features.
Budget
Budget is a major deciding factor. Entry level models cost less while commercial grade units are pricier. Consider long term value rather than upfront cost. A more expensive unit may save money by lasting longer.
Balance your budget with the expected lifespan of the machine.
How to Use and Care for Your Full Size Arcade Machine
Start by reading the assembly instructions carefully. Most machines require minimal setup but proper assembly is key for safety. Secure the cabinet firmly and ensure the controls are connected correctly before powering on.
Keep the machine in a dry and cool area. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture which can damage the screen and electronics. Clean the screen and controls gently with a microfiber cloth to maintain quality.
Regularly check the cables and power connections. Ensure the unit is plugged into a surge protector to protect electronics. Update any firmware via Wi-Fi if available to keep features current and secure.
